Is EMS training safe?

Muscle electrostimulation has so far been used in physiotherapy. For some time now, it has been a popular form of exercise and is enjoyed by beginners and experienced sports enthusiasts alike. Is EMS training safe?

Why is EMS training safe?

It is worth starting from the fact that EMS training devices are modelled on the equipment used by physiotherapists. Special electrodes are placed on the exercising person's body, which after being attached to relevant parts of the body conduct an electrical impulse and stimulate muscles to contract. However, the value of the generated impulse is optimal and adapted to the needs of the person training - the generated energy is only meant to activate the muscle to work.

It is important to note that EMS training is no 'golden mean' for people with a low level of physical activity. The electrostimulation of muscles provides the desired effects only during exercise - in this case, training is based on simple activities that are not difficult for most exercisers. Moreover, participants do not use any equipment during the training session. The lack of dumbbells, barbells and other equipment eliminates the risk of overloading joints or muscles, which reduces the chance of more or less serious injuries.

It is important not to forget that EMS training is safe due to the presence of an instructor. Each type of class - both individual sessions and group training - takes place under the watchful eye of a qualified and experienced trainer, who supervises the participants. Apart from analysing the correct exercise technique, he supervises the operation of the equipment. He adjusts the level of intensity of electric impulses generated, which helps prevent the dangers of excessive stimulation, such as muscle damage or burns. What is more, instructors are the only competent persons to connect the equipment and fix the electrodes to the trainee's body.

Contraindications to EMS training

Despite the many advantages of EMS training, you should not forget about a few important contraindications. It is not possible in every case to use exercises using apparatus for electrostimulation of muscles - in some situations, the use of a stimulus in the form of electricity can prove dangerous to health. The main contraindications for EMS training are:

  • pregnancy
  • epillepsy
  • kidney diseases
  • mental illnesses
  • skin problems such as acne or ulcers
  • active inflammations and infections accompanied by a fever
  • the presence of pacemakers, hearing aids, prostheses and other metal/electrical foreign bodies in the body
  • cardiovascular problems, e.g. unregulated hypertension

It is also worth remembering that exercises with electrostimulation are a solid effort for the body. Therefore, on the day of training, you should refrain from other activities that may cause a high level of psychophysical fatigue.
