Water sports as a replacement for home training?

The summer sun is good for outdoor activities. Beautiful weather is a very good excuse to give up home training and opt for outdoor exercise. Will water sports work as a substitute for classic training? What is worth knowing about them?

What are water sports?

It is not difficult to guess that water sports are all forms of exercise performed in water. Some of them can be associated with specific types of water bodies, e.g. some of them can be practiced anywhere, others only in large bodies of water such as seas or oceans. Most of them are practised during summer when water and air temperatures reach high values. Nevertheless, it should be added that many water sports are year-round disciplines - competitions held in autumn or winter are then added to the group of extreme sports.

Specific disciplines and their variations are inextricably linked to factors such as:

  • windiness
  • ripple level
  • slope and water current
  • attractiveness of the landscape
  • level of environmental cleanliness
  • air and water temperature

Water sports comprise three groups of activities, which are divided according to the form of the participants' relationship with water. Disciplines practiced in water include swimming (including the synchronised variety), water jumping, water football and recreational gymnastics. Underwater sports include diving, but also rugby and underwater hockey. Surface water sports include kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, water skiing and flyboarding.

Can water sports be a substitute for home training?

Although many people see strength training as the only form of physical activity for maintaining optimal fitness and effective body shaping, in practice water sports can prove to be a valuable substitute. Especially when it comes to such disciplines as swimming, which for many years has been recommended by experienced trainers due to its comprehensive involvement of the body. Thanks to swimming, practically the whole body is working - from the muscles of the limbs, through the deep and superficial muscles of the trunk, to the elements of the respiratory system. Systematic swimming will not only help you develop an athletic body and lose weight, but it will also help you develop your shape, cardiorespiratory fitness and enable you to relax and improve your mood.

Water sports and supplementation

One of the greatest dangers of exercising in water is the risk of involuntary muscle contraction. An insufficiently warmed-up body can overreact after contact with water, which poses a serious risk when swimming outdoors. Therefore, it is worth taking care of your daily diet, especially the valuable vitamins and minerals. As a form of additional support, we recommend Vita-Min One by Olimp Sport Nutrition - a complex of the most important vitamins and minerals in the form of handy capsules, designed for physically active people.
