Hair loss - what can be done about it?

The problem of hair loss does not only affect older people. Younger and middle-aged people are increasingly affected. What can be done about it? What could be the cause? Are there effective ways to combat this problem?

Hair loss - causes

The starting point is to distinguish between two types of hair loss. The first one is a slow, gradual and evenly increasing process of hair loss. In most cases, this is a hereditary problem - in many cases thinning or baldness can have a genetic origin and be passed on from generation to generation. Furthermore, gradual hair loss may be an indication for autoimmune diseases (especially alopecia areata), improper hair care (e.g. excessive use of flat irons, improper blow-drying, unsuitable or poor quality cosmetics) or the result of too frequent and intensive hairdressing procedures (e.g. frequent colour changes or perms).

The second 'model' of hair loss is when there is a sudden loss of hair - the thinning is much more rapid than in the previously described cases. The reduction in hair is noticeable in a short period of time and can be caused by issues such as:

  • hormonal imbalances
  • systemic inflammation
  • pathological anomalies of the scalp
  • internal diseases (e.g. food poisoning)
  • poor nutrition - restrictive diets in particular
  • excessive stress and trauma in life (e.g. death of a loved one)
  • major surgical interventions and oncological treatment

How to remedy hair loss?

A consultation with an expert in the field of trichology will certainly help to determine the root of the problem and choose the appropriate methods of combating hair loss. Doctors repeatedly draw attention to hair care issues - the use of strong updos or tight braids is a common problem, which can irritate the follicles and promote thinning. In addition, using good quality cosmetics based on natural ingredients can help your hair and scalp recover.

Often, the problem of hair loss is the result of the aforementioned hormonal imbalances and inflammatory changes. These, in turn, can be inextricably linked to an unbalanced diet, which is deficient in valuable vitamins and minerals. In this case, it is important to ensure that your daily meals are based on wholesome and healthy products. Moreover, it is worth complementing the dietary plan with supplements containing biotin, vitamins A, C, D, E as well as B group vitamins, zinc, copper and selenium. It is equally important to ensure that the body has access to complete proteins, especially collagen. It is also a good idea to include natural products such as nettle and field horsetail, which are valuable sources of silica, in the daily diet.
