Products that lower sugar levels

Excessive blood glucose levels are a problem for a large proportion of the population. The only effective way to regulate it is through a healthy and varied diet. Are there foods that lower sugar levels? What should be taken into account when creating a nutritional plan?

Low-GI products lower sugar levels

One of the most important factors responsible for lowering sugar levels is the consumption of products with a low glycemic index value. It is an indicator describing the rate of absorption of the contained carbohydrates within about 2 hours after consumption of the product. The higher the glycemic index, the greater the chance of a rapid increase in blood glucose levels. This in turn leads to an uncontrolled release of insulin.

In the long run, this state of affairs turns out to be extremely unfavourable for the body. Excessive stimulation of the body to increase insulin levels results in increased resistance of tissues to its action - hence the development of hormonal disorders in the form of insulin resistance. This, in turn, is the starting point for a number of problems such as thyroid disorders, damage to blood vessels, sight or kidney dysfunction, and obesity.

What foods lower sugar levels?

Products which reduce sugar levels are all foods with a GI value of less than 55. A diet plan should mainly be based on these types of products. This way, the risk of a rapid rise in glucose levels and an exaggerated insulin surge is relatively low. Which products have a low GI?

  • Tomatoes
  • Buckwheat groats
  • Brown bread
  • Dark chocolate
  • Red and black fruits (e.g. blueberries, currants, raspberries)
  • Green vegetables (e.g. broccoli, Brussels sprouts, courgettes, cabbage)

In addition, it is worth remembering that products should be semi-cooked. Overcooked cereals, rice and pasta have a high glycemic index. What's more, reheated meals have a lower GI than meals eaten just after cooking.

Dietary supplements and lowering blood sugar levels

Taking certain supplements can be a valuable way to lower blood sugar levels. The ingredients in these products are found in many foods. Unfortunately, their bioavailability and absorption efficiency may not be sufficient to cover daily requirements.

Chromium, one of the most important elements in the diet in terms of regulation of carbohydrate metabolism, is a very good example. Optimal chromium supply supports correct glucose metabolism, which translates into stabilisation of blood sugar levels and protects against uncontrolled insulin secretions. The Chrom Activ product by Olimp Labs is a small tablet containing an adequate dose of 200 µg of chromium, which may be beneficial in the control of correct body weight. The product was produced according to a high standard in a modern Research and Development Centre of the Olimp Laboratories pharmaceutical company.
